Getting Physical Together can be Fun!
When you get home from work do you crash on the couch and watch tv most of the evening with your husband or wife? We go to work every day whether in the home or outside. We spend so much time sitting! Society today has become more sedentary and physical activity has become less a priority. Schools are canceling physical education and when was the last time you walked to the corner store for milk?
We watch TV and commercials are always trying to sell us the next product to save us time and effort. Most children don’t walk to school anymore. They either catch a bus or their parents drive them to school. Exercise is something we feel we need to shop for to get several fancy outfits and a different footwear for every activity. If you are not decked out in the latest exercise gear than you may feel too embarrassed to join that class that interests you. We have become so obsessed with how we look that we are afraid to join a gym or class because we may not measure up to the young ones who never gave birth to a child or whose body has not matured. Meanwhile, we stay home feeling discouraged and allowing all kinds of reasons to keep us from the exercise we know we need.
What are we doing? We need to stop comparing ourselves to others. We are not in a competition. We need to decide to just get out and not worry about counting reps or trying to keep up with the young kids in Zumba class.
Why should we pay a huge chunk of money to join crowded gyms when we know people often just quit or their attendance becomes inconsistent and eventually drops down to nothing? There are other fun options you can consider.
Now if you are a go to the gym or take a fitness class kind of person, then please don’t take offense. You are not the majority. If you are dedicated and comfortable exercising in that atmosphere then we salute you and encourage you to keep up the good work. If consistency is an issue, then remember to schedule your gym/class time just like you schedule your appointments.
But why don’t we find activities that we can enjoy together! Things that get us out of the house and into nature! Fresh air is good for the body and the soul. Check your city website under recreation, trails or parks and find all the great walking trails in and around the city and surrounding areas. They are usually rated by difficulty and often tell you if there are benches, cell phone availability, picnic tables, washroom facilities etc. If you are a beginner, then explore the easier ones first then work your way towards the medium ones. Take your camera or cell phone along with you and capture the beautiful wildlife and flowers. Have fun capturing a pretty scene behind you in a couple selfie or family selfie as you document each trail. Work your way to the more difficult hiking trails and discover amazing vistas that you would never have seen so enjoy the moment together.
You could also check online for all the local beaches and go find them. You will discover that each one is unique and beautiful while you get to enjoy a great walk and perhaps even a picnic!
The fun thing about these suggestions is that every trail and every beach will be different as the weather and each season changes. You will never run out of new things to see and discover.
There are lots of things you can do together to exercise and I’m sure if you think about it, you can both come up with some fun exciting ideas between you. Write them down and give in to each other’s ideas. Get off the couch and get out there and enjoy each other’s company and get fit and have fun at the same time!
You don’t need to get fancy neon outfits to have fun and exercise. All you need is a good attitude (encourage each other). You can start with a walk through a neighbourhood or local trail. You don’t need to spend money, all you need is each other, an open mind and an open door.

What is stopping you now? Finding new ways and new places to exercise together has been proven to keep your marriage fresh and exciting. Variety keeps you from getting bored and improves your efforts to reach your fitness goals.
Did you know that men will open up more and talk more while walking side by side? It’s true!
But best of all, spending more time with your husband or wife while being a positive encouragement to each other enriches your relationship and improves your marriage!
